In Italy this town is known as ‘il paese che muore’, which means ’the town that is dying’. The rock is crumbling. Earthquakes and erosion are slowly doing their destructive work.
The town was founded over 2500 years ago by the Etruscans. They built towns on hilltops because of malaria in the lowlands.
Civita di Bagnoregio is not only amazing from a distance. Also the architecture is stunning. Modernity didn’t destroy much because of the towns isolated position. No cars, no parking lots, no highway.
The population is small. There are only twelve residents in wintertime. In the summer over a hundred. And there are tourists off course, but it is not overcrowded.
Sometimes it is hard to tell where the rock ends and where the town begins.
